Lariat receives top award in national journalism competition

The Saddleback College Lariat has been named Most Outstanding Community College newspaper in the nation by the American Scholastic Press Association from New York.
For the second time, the Lariat has also topped the category of First Place with Special Merit.
The student-run publication was chosen over three other California community college newspapers to win its awards, including Chapparal from College of the Desert in Palm Desert, The Collegian at Los Angeles City College and The Roundup from Pierce College in Woodland Hills.
The Lariat is a student-run newspaper produced in Journalism 120. It publishes throughout the school year.
It is circulated widely on and off campus and also distributed at Irvine Valley College.
The Lariat also publishes online at www.lariatnews.com.
Students interested in pursuing practical experience in a news organization can join the Lariat by enrolling in the fall semester.
The four-unit class meets Mondays from noon to 4:20 p.m. and Wednesdays from noon to 1:20 p.m.
