Awareness Week arrives on campus

Despite Awareness Week getting off to a soggy start, the rain did not keep both the Clothes Line Project and AIDS awareness events from seeing the sun. Hosted by the Associated Student Government in the quad, Awareness Week served to give students insight into important issues.
 
Day one showcased the Clothes Line Project which brought light to the issue of violence against women. The Clothes Line Project hangs shirts made by people affected by violence in the Orange County area. Victims, families and friends can write their tragedies on the shirts and hang them to bring awareness to acts of violence happening close to home.
 
"A lot of students aren't aware of what is going on," said Brent Palmer, ASG officer of the Events Cabinet. "A victim could be the person sitting next to you."
 
Day two of Awareness Week was dedicated to AIDS education. Tables were set up in the quad full of pamphlets and information about safe sex, STD's and condoms. A photo mural of factual AIDS information was displayed by Molly Grant who also set up a bake sale to benefit Partners in Health for Haiti.
 
"We have this booth because I feel it's important to spread awareness about AIDS," said Molly Grant, 19, liberal studies, Chair of Aids Awareness. "It's necessary to let people know how they can live with AIDS, and that there are cures in the process."
 
The AIDS awareness event served to educate students about the realities of sexually transmitted diseases and help raise funds for Haiti.

The Clothes Line Project will be open for the remainder of the week for any students who wish to contribute. The ASG office, located in SSC 211, is also welcoming of any students who have questions, suggestions, or who wish to get involved in the future.
