Saddleback defeated De Anza College, 5-2, to capture the school's first state tennis title on May 6 at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach. Saddleback finished the season undefeated at 18-0.
Behind every monument are its thinkers, builders and admirers. When the plans to build a Veterans Memorial at Saddleback College first came to light over 8 years ago, few saw the potential of the once-bare lot nestled in the corner of the campus’ quad.
It’s been 25 years since the opening of Irvine Valley College, and it’s time to celebrate. On Friday, June 4 at 6 p.m. Irvine Valley College will be throwing a celebration kick-off that should not be missed. The event will occur in the new PAC theater building.

The 10th Annual Piano Benefit Concert performed at Irvine Valley College Saturday night. The performance included some of IVC faculty members who included works from Chopin and Scriabin. The concert celebrated the 200-year birth anniversaries of Schumann and Chopin.

Professor of Art 100 visual Display/exhibition Design, Bob Rickerson, assembled the annual Student Art exhibition of 2010. With the help of a student to prepare the gallery space, the gallery displayed 88 works of students.
Through the first two games of a best-of-three first round, the No. 6 Saddleback College softball team had seen a lull in its record-setting pace of power numbers. Even the most well oiled machines need a tune up. That is what the first two games looked like, as the Gauchos exploded for two, three-run home runs with two outs in the second inning, and an early 7-0 lead in an eventual 8-5 win in Game 3 against No. 11 Palomar College Sunday (May 2).
Despite an equal amount of hits and errors, four of each, No. 6 Saddleback College outlasted No. 11 Palomar College for the 3-2 home victory Saturday (May 1) in the first game of the best-of-three first round of the Southern California Regional softball playoffs.
Santa Monica College came close to beating the Gauchos Wednesday but fell short after a nail-biting 5-4 loss to the No. 1 seed Saddleback, in the Southern California Regional Finals. Saddleback advances to take on De Anza College in the its second State Final appearace and for its first State Championship.

A Capistrano Valley High School student caused a slight traffic jam Tuesday when he swerved off the road and jumped a road divider with his car at Saddleback College’s Avery Pkwy. entrance. The incident which according to witnesses, was due to the driver swerving his vehicle to avoid another and losing control in the process.
UPDATE: As of Monday night, Capistrano Unified Education Association, the teacher’s union, has entered into negotiations with the school board, and as of press time the strike has ended. The board and the union came to a tentative agreement that guarantees teacher’s salary cuts to remain temporary. The teachers will receive their restored salary rates and furlough days if revenue increases. This agreement awaits a vote by union membership in the following weeks.
Teachers from all over Capistrano Unified School District chanted “we are the teachers – mighty, mighty teachers” Monday at a support rally at Saddleback College. The gym was packed with students and teachers from across the district all relaying the same message - the teachers are marching on.
This past week Saddleback Community College was host to Earth Week, which put a spotlight on the environment and the impact that human beings have on Mother Nature. The week was created by Saddleback’s Awareness Club and Green Committee.

Consistently being the best team on the floor match after match is usually a good thing. Unfortunately for the Irvine Valley College men’s volleyball team, the success of caught up to them. The Lasers came out with their chests out, but Moorpark College got a quick jump on the Lasers and held on to win Thursday’s (April 22) CCCAA men’s volleyball State semifinal in five sets, 30-22, 30-24, 28-30, 31-33, 15-13.
Everyone seems to have the same pattern in life. Go to school, grow up, graduate high school and college and then have a career. By about 60 years old, some people are already retiring from their careers. Art is one of the few careers that could last a life time.

The student quad was silent this last Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by CCS, ASG, GSA and the Latin American Film Club a “Day of Silence” was held to protest the bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGTB) students and their supporters.
Despite Awareness Week getting off to a soggy start, the rain did not keep both the Clothes Line Project and AIDS awareness events from seeing the sun. Hosted by the Associated Student Government in the quad, Awareness Week served to give students insight into important issues.

Just minutes before the rain started to fall on the Saddleback College tennis courts, Erika Kagawa defeated Irvine Valley College’s Natalie Loria to win the Southern California Regional semifinals Tuesday (April 20). Kagawa’s 6-4, 6-2 win in No. 1 singles was the fifth of the day, leading to a second playoff sweep in a row for the Gauchos, this time over the conference rival Lasers.
Mount San Jacinto College made it a little easier for the Saddleback College women’s tennis team to win the Southern California Dual Team Regional quarter finals Tuesday (April 13). The No. 1 Gauchos knocked off the No. 8 Eagles 5-0 in their seventh playoff appearance since coach Jay Amos took over in 2001.
Saddleback College named Rich Goodman, a professor of Human Services, and Louise Jacobs, an Emeritus vocal instructor, as the 2010 Professors of the Year. Professors Goodman and Jacobs will be nominated for the countywide Teacher of the Year award, selected by the Orange County Department of Education.

The Associated Student Government’s turnover rate has increased dramatically with the sudden resignation of five ASG members. As of press time, three members have officially quit their positions and two others have unofficially signaled their resignation.
Saddleback College Vice President of Student Services Lise Telson has resigned. Telson had worked at Saddleback since 2003, and was responsible for overseeing student service programs including but not limited to campus police, student discipline and rights, admissions and records, etc.
